Why do I need an editor at all?

Even the most seasoned writer benefits from working with an editor. An editor is able to take an objective look at your writing to see what works, and what needs more work. They can identify inconsistencies, faulty plot-lines, and under-developed characters. And, crucially, they can give suggestions for improvements. Without this kind of input, it is very difficult to get your work to a publishable standard.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I SEND MY WORK IN TO THE BOOK EDIT?

The Director oversees all submissions to the Book Edit, and either takes on the work herself or places the writer with an associate editor.  Great care is taken to try and match the work with an appropriate editor. Very rarely. we may find we cannot help you with your project, in which case it may be necessary to suggest alternative routes, e.g. creative writing courses.

WHAT DO I NEED TO SUBMIT?

In the first instance we ask that you submit a first chapter, or first 3000 words of your novel or short story, along with a covering letter outlining your ambitions for the project. Please also include the word count of your submission. Please make sure the work is attached to your email as a word document.

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?

The Book Edit offers a bespoke service, looking at each project individually and quoting accordingly.

HOW DO I PAY?

We accept BACS transfers. If you’re not paying from a UK bank account, we recommend you use TransferWise.

I DON'T LIVE IN THE UK. CAN WE STILL WORK TOGETHER?

Yes. All our editorial notes are provided as word documents, and as tracked changes embedded in your text, so the work can be done wherever you're based.
